[+/-] : Indian antimony struggles in quiet market

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 16 May 07 – Indian antimony 99.65%min price is stable in a range of USD5,400-5,450/mt CIF Nhava Sheva and INR290-310/kg ex-works but with trends pointing downward, traders said to Asian Metal. “It's taken longer than expected for consumers to come back into the market after the Chinese Spring Festival period,' one trader affirmed. Previous expectations about a recovery in demand and prices in March have now been postponed indefinably, another dealer said with pessimist.

Market conditions were reported to be relatively quiet, although traders said deals were still being struck. Most of antimony ingot deals are concluded with low figures, just to keep production plants open, and traders said that barring any unexpected shortages market activity was not expected to increase markedly. One trader said material offered at below USD5,400/mt CIF Mumbai was not being snapped up by buyers, and suggested that prices could slip a little if market continues in the same trend.”Now demand for antimony in India is around 15% lower that last year,” commented an insider, “Consumers are using more and more substitutes and Chinese producers are no willing to decrease price. In my opinion, if we want to see the market return into activity, Chinese should have to reduce prices to a new quota, and it should be lower that USD5,000/mt.”

For Indian antinomy trioxide, situation is no much better. Dealers opined the market is having a very bad moment. “Lifetime consumers are now buying material straight to Chinese dealers instead to the Indians,” explained an insider,” They are buying material regardless the quality, specially for the textile industry, at prices below USD4,700/mt CIF Nhava Sheva, and we cannot afford that price.”

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 17 May 07 – Sources informed that antimony market keeps slack and prices remain stable at RMB39,000-40,000/t (USD5,078-5,208/t) ex works for 99.65%min antimony ingot and around RMB36,000/t (USD4,688/t) ex works for antimony trioxide.

A Hunan-based producer said that they quote RMB40,000-40,500/t (USD5,078-5,273/t) ex works for 99.65%min antimony ingot, however, few deals were conlcuded due to low deamnd. The source also confirmed antimony trioxide market is not optimistic either, with prices around RMB36,000/t ex works (USD4,688/t) for good quality material.


According to the source, the main reason for the market sluggish is that consumers still have materials on hand. Once they begin to make up stocks, the situation will turn better.

The smelter, one of the approved suppliers for antimony products, is running regularly.

A Guangzhou-based trader revealed that the company mainly deals with antimony ingot, but the market is so disappointing that they intend to stop the business for a while. “Prices stabilize at RMB39,000-40,000/t (USD5,078-5,208/t) ex works, but inquiries are few,” said the source.

The source believed it would take a long time for the market to recover unless there is a turnaround in export market.

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 17 May - Price for antimony 99.65%min trade in India was reported stable yesterday at around USD5,400-5,450/mt CIF Nhava Sheva and INR290-310/kg in internal market, although one New Delhi trader reported securing slightly lower prices of around USD5,350/mt CIF Mumbay.

Indian purchase of material was weak, with tonnages concluded remaining nominal. Across India, buyers are still reluctant to obtain material at the current price and demand has decreased notably, industry analysts reported to Asian Metal.

India's domestic prices for antimony were stabilizing, traders said. “Antimony is one of the important basic chemical raw materials and also one of the most important product in the chemical industry,” commented a dealer,” The national industry is increasing but demand is decreasing. The reason is that consumers are tired of high prices and after holding off purchases now they are using substitutes.”

A second dealer reported that some colleagues have stopped dealing with the material as is not profitable. “I concluded a sale of 3t of antimony ingot at USD5,400/mt Nhava Sheva,” stated the source, “But I have no more inquiries to answer. Chinese are waiting for demand to back to the spot market to do business but demand in India is weakening.”

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 18 May 07 – Antimony participants are suffering hardship due to the sluggish market all over the world.

A Yunnan-based producer told Asian metal that prices drop below RMB40,000/t (USD5,208/t) ex work for 99.85%min antimony ingot this week. “We concluded some deals at about RMB40,500-41,000/t (USD5,273-5,339/t) ex works last week, but now it is nearly RMB2,000/t (USD260/t) lower,” said the source.

The source thought appreciation of RMB is one of the reasons that cause the market to be slack, besides fierce competition in antimony industry. Meanwhile, the source revealed that quotations of raw materials had broken through RMB30,000/t (USD3,906/t) ex work, leaving very thin profits to antimony producers.


The smelter, with an output of 400-500tpm for antimony ingot, is going to reduce production due to low demand and high production cost.

A Yunnan-based trader, one of the approved exporters for antimony products, informed that export market is slow. “The market is in deadlock, and it is very hard to conclude deals now,” said the source. “Prices for 99.65%min antimony ingot are around USD5,300-5,350/t FOB China and USD4,500-4,550/t FOB China for antimony trioxide, however, no one shows interest in purchasing.”

According to the source, smuggling is the main reason for the dull market. “Nobody knows when the market will turn better,” commented the source.
