The American firm Luna Innovations Inc. has developed and patented an innovative flame-retardant additive based on a polyacrylamide compound i.e. a super-absorbent polymer (SAP). This flame retardant material includes microspheres (being 5 to 80 microns in size) that are first melted with a water solution containing inorganic phosphate and subsequently dried. Then the microsperes form a phosphate filler powder that acts as a barrier that slows down the heat transfer through materials during fire. According to the firm, its new flame-retardant technology suits for plastics, composites, adhesives and also coatings. Moreover it can be used in a wide range of applications.
